Katherine Xin’s expertise focuses on organizational behavior and strategic human resources. Katherine Xin, a native of the Chinese mainland, is based in Shanghai. According to Xin, talent retention is one of the hot topics in China, as in any country in the world. She comments: “In China, talent demand and supply are currently out of balance. With booming foreign direct investments, there is mounting pressure on a limited talent pool and diminishing employee loyalty to employers. If not managed well, talented executives will hop from one company to the other. Employers in turn are inclined to invest less in developing their people which may be the start of a vicious circle.”
Xin’s research focuses on how top management teams function in Sino-Western joint ventures, more specifically how managers and executives of different cultures and languages can work together harmoniously and effectively. One area she is particularly interested in, and researched for more than 15 years, is “leader - subordinate exchanges.” Xin explains: “The single most important reason for involuntary turnover is the working relationship between an employee and his or her boss. Regardless of your culture, the person-to-person work relationship remains the most important driver of employee performance and loyalty.”
In relation to this topic, Katherine Xin also researches how performance management systems shape employees’ mindsets. She continues: “I have discovered that many human resource challenges faced by foreign companies in China are not really that specific to China. Any company entering an emerging market or even any new market would face these same challenges. It is all about making people from different cultures work together effectively."
With so many companies eying or having already established a foothold in China, Katherine Xin’s expertise is much in demand. She teaches in the following programs:
