ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Because we believe that world-class business leaders cannot be mass-produced, we are highly selective throughout our admissions process.

Application specifics
Once you are comfortable with our admissions requirements and process, you will need to complete and submit the following:

IMD MBA application form
Your written application should demonstrate strong academic ability, solid career progression, business achievements and leadership potential. We look at how you communicate your ideas and how you contribute to the world in which you live. The 11 short essays should clearly and concisely express:

  • Your business orientation
  • Your international experience or exposure
  • Your achievements and project/people leadership experience
  • Your extra-curricula activities
  • Your values and priorities
  • Clear career goals
  • Solid reasons for wanting to take an MBA

"IMD's admissions process is one of the toughest. It gave me an honest chance to show my capabilities, and I knew the other participants would be excellent after such a thorough screening process."

Letters of recommendation
Your three confidential letters of recommendation give us an extra assessment of your overall personality, your business achievements and your leadership capabilities.

The recommendation forms provided in the online IMD MBA application form must be used and substitutes are not accepted.

From the online application, you email one form to each person from whom you are requesting a recommendation. Each recommender completes their form and sends it to IMD. If you are company-sponsored, you should supply at least one letter of recommendation from a senior executive who knows you well and is familiar with your company's plans for you.

Tips on selecting recommenders: Choose people who know you well and with whom you have mutual respect over someone with an important title. Balance your choices: choose people that represent diverse facets of your professional life spanning various companies and years (preferably direct managers). Alternatively, choose someone who has shared an experience with you either in your professional career or an extracurricular activity (mentors, charity event coordinators, colleagues, etc).

Asian / Latin America interview dates
Singapore: 20 and 21 May, 2010
Sao Paulo tbc: September, 2010

If you apply for the February 1st or April 1st deadline you have the option of being interviewed in Singapore. Alternatively, if you apply by the August 1st deadline you have the option of being interviewed in Sao Paulo. The procedure is similar to Lausanne assessment center, but class observation and the MBA lunch will be replaced with alumni interaction.

Assessment center in Lausanne

The assessment day is an essential part of our evaluation process as it allows us to assess your intellectual capabilities, emotional intelligence, integrity, and ability to perform under pressure and work with others. This complete evaluation incorporates:

  • Personal interview
A member of the admissions committee conducts the interview with the aim of getting to know you and developing a better understanding of your career progression and key achievements.
  • Impromptu presentation
When you arrive, you will be given a business topic on which to prepare a five minute presentation. This gives you an opportunity to demonstrate, amongst other things, your communication and presentation skills.
  • Case study
You will discuss a mini case study with other interview candidates, led by a professor. This will give you a feel for our teaching methods and us a feel for how you will contribute in this kind of setting.
  • MBA class observation
If possible, you will sit in and observe our MBAs in the auditorium. This helps you to assess us and our teaching style, just as we will be assessing you and your potential.
  • Lunch with MBAs
Talk to our current participants and ask them any questions you have about their experiences.

Following your assessment, the admissions committee reviews your candidacy and compares it to others. Normally, we will confirm if you have been selected as one of the unique members of the following year's class within two weeks of your interview.

The applicant is responsible for all travel expenses.

'Based in Asia, I opted to take my admissions interview in Singapore. Discussions and interviews with the MBA Program Director, Director of MBA Admissions, successful alumni and potential fellow participants met all my expectations. Moreover, at the end of this tough yet exciting process I received the admissions offer and was spared from further anxiety!'

Reapplications
We occasionally encourage people to ‘reapply’ in a few years’ time, however this advice does not guarantee admission at a later date.

The reasons are communicated directly to you and may include:

  • Limited work experience
  • Limited management responsibility
  • Limited international exposure
  • Age

All reapply applicants must complete a new application. However, you do not need to resubmit academic transcripts or the GMAT score unless there has been a change or the original has expired.

The application fee is required with each application.

Deferrals
IMD does not grant deferred admissions. Due to the high demand, all applicants are accepted for a specific year. If you wish to be considered for another year, you must reapply.
